Exposing students to these skills and expanding their leadership capability requires special curriculum, training and resources to prepare them for the challenge. It is beyond the State of Utah’s budgeting capacity to fund the necessary teaching support and to infuse the student experience with outside academic and practical influence. In keeping with a strong focus on students, faculty, and the community, it is our desire to create opportunities for industry to become strategic partners of the new program.

Industry support and strategic partnerships are needed to assist Utah State University in meeting the current and future demand for technical designers who can integrate business, environmental and technological considerations into the development of innovative products for the outdoors.

These relationships can assist Utah State University in providing a broad foundational education combined with practical “real world” experiences. According to the Outdoor Industry Association (2015), the ethos of the outdoor industry is built from within and thrives on epic adventures, pushed limits and shared interests of an intimate community of passionate enthusiasts. With the industry’s assistance, we plan to replicate the same ethos within the individual and throughout this program. One example is through a professional seminar experience each semester that will expose students to outdoor experiences, industry professionals, career development strategies and professional practices necessary for successful employment .vista
